Jay Tamang was born and raised in the Himalayas of Nepal and is now based in California. His lifelong connection with nature has shaped both his vision and his purpose. Growing up in a remote Himalayan village without roads, electricity, or nearby schools, Jay learned early the values of patience, perseverance, and resilience.
At 15, he left his village for Kathmandu and eventually built a career in the trekking industry, working as a porter, guide, and tour organizer before immigrating to the United States. Photography became more than a creative pursuit. It became a way to reconnect with nature, find peace, and tell stories through light, landscape, weather, and natural phenomena. From the fog and changing light of Mount Tamalpais and the Marin Headlands to the waterfalls, granite walls, autumn colors, and Firefall of Yosemite, Jay seeks moments that create a deeper connection between people and the natural world.
His approach is grounded in authenticity. He believes meaningful photographs require being present—watching, waiting, and experiencing the moment rather than manufacturing it. His limited-edition fine art prints are carefully produced on museum-quality materials, personally inspected for color, clarity, detail, and longevity, and then signed and numbered.
But Jay's work extends beyond photography. His journey from a remote Himalayan village to becoming an artist in California has inspired him to use his creativity and resources to give back. Through photography, storytelling, education, and community support, he continues to maintain a connection with Nepal and support opportunities for children and communities.
For Jay, photography is ultimately about more than making beautiful images. It is about connection, memory, peace, and purpose—using art to honor nature, share stories, and give something back to the places and people that have shaped his life.
